“In Search of Endeavour” –Inspector Morse Trail
This route plan was devised to visit the locations used in the filming of Inspector Morse based upon the novels of Colin Dexter OBE. Surprisingly perhaps much of the location filming did not take place in Oxford but throughout the Cotswolds and the Westcountry. When the television series was first screened in 1987 millions worldwide became avid fans of the programme, the late John Thaw, Kevin Whately, the books by Colin Dexter but mostly of the car! We therefore envisaged it being driven in our 1967 “Morse Mobile” Jaguar Mark II Saloon but obviously any of our classic cars could be used.
The total mileage covered on this map is 156 miles but of course you may wish to deviate to take in the delightful villages, historic houses and gardens that abound in this part of the UK.
Details have been thoroughly researched to enable those who would like the luxury of an “all things Morse” tour without the cost of owning and maintaining a 40 year old car.
Locations visited are those used during the filming and are not in chronological order of either the TV series or the books but are designed to take the most appropriate and scenic route. Driving through the picturesque countryside of Wiltshire, Berkshire Oxfordshire and Somerset this trail allows you to sample the delights of Oxford, the Cotswolds and Bath alighting at magnificent Blenhiem Palace or the Royal Crescent Hotel in Georgian Bath.
The places featured in this route map either allow visitors at certain times of the year or are visible from the road but if you are the driver please exercise discretion at the famous Morse watering holes used!
It contains things to see and do enroute (usually unrelated to Morse), a brief guide to the location used and the episode in which it appeared.
All you have to do to enjoy your drive is to decide which of you plays the part of Morse and that of Lewis.
